I also appreciate that Yang puts some backmatter into each volume about the importance of the 1940s radio show that this book is based on, and his family's story, but he doesn't write it condescendingly. Everything about this story is just a smooth, interesting, all-age superhero book. The secondary characters all have growth, we get to see the staples of the Superman family: the Kents, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Perry White, but they fit into the story naturally. I enjoy that the lense we see Superman through is that of a child who looks up to but does not fawn over Superman. I like that Superman is fighting for a worthy cause (stopping bigots from tormenting innocent families) without stopping every ten seconds to announce what he's doing. I enjoy that the story started in media res and filled in Superman's origin story as the story progressed, not getting to the whole Krypton blows up, Superman is shipped off to Earth until nearly the end of the story. But the best Superman story in the 21t entry is easily Gene Luen Yand's Superman Smashes The Klan. Some of my favorite comic book writers have worked on Superman or Action Comics this millenium: Geoff Johns, Brian Michael Bendis, Grant Morrison, Kurt Busiek, Greg Rucka, Marv Wolfman, George Pérez, Greg Pak, and Gail Simone.
